Topic Of The Week

How Supported Internships benefits both businesses and individuals
A Supported Internship is a structured, work-based study programme for 16 to 24-year-olds with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The core aim of a Supported Internship is a substantial work placement, facilitated by the support of an expert job coach, equipping participants with the skills to progress to paid employment.

In an economy where only 4.8% of adults with learning disabilities are employed, Supported Internships offer a crucial pathway to meaningful work for young people with SEND.

Local context
In the East Riding, Supported Internships are offered by several colleges in the area. for young people between the ages of 16 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Working in partnership with both local employers and East Riding of Yorkshire Council departments the aim is to offer diverse opportunities for interns in the East Riding area to gain valuable work experience, develop essential skills, and build confidence in real-world settings, ultimately enhancing their employability and career prospects.

How Supported Internships work
A partnership is formed between an education provider and an employer to match eligible students with available placements. Interns spend the academic year in various job roles within local businesses to learn a breadth of employability skills. Interns and the employer are assisted by job coaches, who provide support within the workplace.

Job coaches are essential to the success of Supported Internships, offering tailored support to the interns to navigate workplace challenges, develop specific skills, and build confidence and for employers, providing guidance on how to effectively integrate and support interns within their team.

With the overall aim to support Interns to graduate as employment-ready young people, prepared to secure their first jobs.

Duration
A Supported Internship lasts between 6 months and 1 year, with most programmes aligned with the academic year with new intake of interns in September.

Funding and wages
Young people on Supported Internships are in full-time education, and their internships are typically unpaid. They are funded through the young person’s EHCP, with additional funding available via Access to Work for work-based costs, which may include job coaching and transport costs.

How Supported Internships help young people with SEND
Many supported internship programmes achieve employment rates of up to 70% for their interns, compared to the national average of employment for adults with a learning disability of only 4.8%.

As well as interns learning a wide range of work-related employability, social and interpersonal skills the programme raises broader career aspirations for young people with SEND, show cases the range of opportunities available in the workforce and supports them in achieving paid employment and becoming confident, independent young adults.

Benefits for business
- New source of diverse talent is brought into the team.
- Disability confidence and awareness increases.
- Leadership and coaching skills are enhanced for those who mentor and manage interns.
- Employee engagement is enhanced as many employees are proud to work for an organisation that supports young people with additional needs.
- Builds connections with the local community.
- Enhances reputation.
