HMRC updates tax guidance to include electronic payment of tips
Tips, gratitude and service charges are commonplace in restaurants and the service industry. As covid-19 has accelerated the move away from cash payments, there has also been a shift towards customers leaving electronic tips. HMRC guidance for employers has been updated to reflect that payment of electronic tips does not change the basic principle that income tax and NIC are still required for these payments.
